Projects & Issues
Covering Kids & Families (April 2002 to March 31,
2006)
There are over 140,000 uninsured children
in Oklahoma. Most
uninsured children are in working families that are not covered
by employer-based health plans or cannot afford private health insurance. Yet
most will qualify for free health care coverage offered through SoonerCare, Oklahoma’s State Children’s Health
Insurance Program.
Covering Kids & Families
(CKF) was a national initiative
that worked to increase the number of uninsured children and
pregnant women who receive health care coverage. The
Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation provides funding for CKF with
direction provided from the Southern Institute on Children
and Families.
Covering Kids & Families focused on reaching
Medicaid-eligible children and families who are either uninsured
or underinsured through simplifying
the enrollment and renewal process, conducting
outreach initiatives and
coordinating with state and
community agencies and organizations.
Working Together
Covering
Kids & Families has led the charge in Oklahoma
to make reducing the number of
children who are uninsured a top priority.
Through a massive statewide effort including both public and
private partners, over 350,000 children are currently enrolled
into SoonerCare and Medicaid. Oklahoma has removed the asset
test, simplified the application, developed an on-line
application, moved from income verification to income
declaration, eliminated face-to-face interviews, and clients are
able to mail in an application with no need to go to a county
office, all in an effort to remove barriers to the enrollment
process. | |
