Youth Initiatives
Parent EducationTeens are constantly bombarded with sexual messages in the
media - from TV, movies, video games and music to the marketing
ads for everything from clothing to shampoo. Too often, peer
pressure reinforces the negative media and societal messages,
encouraging risky behavior. Our goal is to support parents
and provide them with the information and resources they need as
their children move into and through the teen years.
Parent
education workshops are offered free-of-charge in various
locations throughout the Oklahoma City area. The workshops are
fun, interactive sessions that help parents, grandparents and
other caregivers learn how to talk with their middle school-aged
child(ren) about self-esteem, puberty, media messages, peer
pressure, responsible decisions and good health practices.
During the workshops, we will discuss important "growing up"
issues facing children today --alcohol, drugs, and HIV/AIDS.
We will also share what their children are learning from their
friends and the media. If you are interested in a parent
workshop, please contact
Shante Fenner at 405.236.5437 ext. 107. |
