Positive Ways Educators
Knowing that positive peer role models can be a strong
protective factor in the lives of teens, high school students
from selected high schools are recruited as positive role models
to facilitate the PSI curriculum, under the supervision of the
adult coordinator. The high school students, called
Positive Ways educators, must go through an application and
screening process, as well as an interview. They are
expected to remain in good standing with their school, to attend
a two-day mandatory training and participate in all schedule
meetings. They add an important element to the program
that adults cannot provide: they bridge the age gap and
have a better understanding of that it's like to be a teen
today. Because of this, the younger teens are more likely
to listen to and absorb more of the information that the older
teens are presenting. In addition to helping present the PSI
program, the Positive Ways peer educators plan several projects
to promote prevention and serve others in the community.
Each year, they locate and adopt needy families for Christmas.
In the spring, they promote the National Day to Prevent Teen
Pregnancy by distributing parent and teen information.
Throughout the school year, they work diligently to get more
community organizations and businesses involved in supporting
their prevention efforts. These teens are taking action
that is helping other teens in their schools and neighborhoods.
Students from Southeast
and Star Spencer High Schools interested in serving as a
Positive Ways peer educator can complete the application and
return it to OICA. Click here for Positive Ways
application. |
