Decisions made in Washington could mean big things for Oklahoma kids.
A bipartisan committee announced Monday that it failed to reach an agreement on nearly $1.2 trillion in federal spending cuts over the next ten years. While federal budget wrangling might seem like Washington politics as usual - our Oklahoma children could be collateral damage. Sixty-six percent of all funds spent on Oklahoma children are federal dollars, according to an analysis by the Oklahoma Policy Institute. With no deficit reduction plan in place, automatic budget cuts are phased in by Jan. 23, 2012. Those budget cuts protect spending on Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security -- but not other programs that Oklahoma children including some federal education spending.
